6. His deep red scales sparkled, but they did not shine. The black spines running from the bridge of his nose to the tip of his tail were like polished onyx, unaffected by the smoke rising from his snout. Black horns and a pair of equally ebony wings shone with an iridescent light. All the earth beneath him and the sky above him revered Aden’Yaverin as a dragon. The dragons had been hiding for the past few centuries, allowing the other races to build their lives without interference. Dragons had always been viewed as channelers of wisdom, the perfect scholars and advisors. They were the offspring of the Titans, after all. Aden’Yaverin was the son of Kosmos, the King of the Sky and his wife, Terameas, the Queen of the Earth. He was a first generation Earthly Dragon and had been completely content in his role watching over this uninhabited land. However, something had alerted him to danger. A new evil had arisen under the noses of the Titans. Demons had begun to threaten the lands of Veshanna. These newcomers had a distinct appetite for death. They were obviously created by a rather powerful Rogue Dragon. His giant wings flexed through the air as he headed for the closest kingdom for help. The kingdom of Eyre, his beloved neighbor.
In all his millennia of life, he had watched this kingdom grow and mature. Now it was a large, thriving place, kept in peace from what he was seeing now as he flew over towns. The humans and elves on the ground looked up in wonder as they saw him soar across the sky. The elves knew firmly that dragons existed, but by now humans had been told that they were nothing but folklore. It felt good to stretch his wings finally despite all the slack-jawed stares. From what he remembered of Eyre, the nation had a tradition of humans and elves living in harmony. Looking forward, to the capital city, he wondered what had transpired since his absence.
Aden’Yaverin dove slowly toward the open courtyard of the palace. Everyone had seen him coming, allowing him to land. At least the nobles and the guards remembered Dragons’ roles. Having landed, he changed his body to that of a human-like creature. He was dressed in the deep red of his scales and he had kept his black curled horns. His eyes were black in color as was his hair. His human skin was rather pale compared to the elves and humans, though. His ears were long and pointed, but they were different from the point of an elf’s. Turning toward the palace, a few nobles approached him in wonder and delight. After exchanging pleasantries and what not, the nobles finally informed him that the ruling party for Eyre now was a princess named Tahira. No one bothered to mention her race, but they all seemed to be very respectful of her as their sovereign. Someone even mentioned that she was a follower of Terameas. Good. She would understand where he was coming from, then.
