"Byron, this is . . . The Wrath. . . Heard tell of a Vampire, Luc. . . Heard he cut the servos right off the city." The com cut in to Luci. "Heard tell he had bright blue eyes and long black hair and rode a Nightmare."
Lu jumped in her seat, grabbing the comm. Hours of trying anythign in their path had exhausted her. But this... "There haven't been nightmares in this sector in decades....where was it headed, Wrath? Do you have any survivors?" She scanned the blackness around her, looking for the source of the signal. It was so clear...it had to be close....
"Just me, Luc. . . And Trevor." A soft, sadistic laugh echoed over the com. "If you want to see him again. . . You'll find me, Luci Eddinbough. And you'll bring the locket." The com went back to broadcasting soft static.
Lu felt her stomach lurch as the comm went dead. Flipping the switch to autopilot, she stormed out of the cockpit and down the close corridor into the common area. "Gemi...just got a comm...found him." She sank to the floor in the galley, clasping her fingers around the very locket he'd mentioned, tight around her throat.
Gemisa looked up, her brown eyes red rimmed. "Who, Cap'n?" She asked from where she sat. Her body curled around itself as she leaned against the wall, arms wrapped around her legs. Tek stood behind teh Bo's'n, patting her shoulder gently every few minutes with a sad look on her face.
"The bastard who took down New London. He's got Trevor. Wants me to find him." She felt lightheaded... "He knows me. Told me to bring my necklace." Her bewildered eyes caught Gemisa's, her voice hardening. "Black hair, bright blue eyes. Rides a Nightmare named Wrath...." She didn't have to say the rest. No civilians or slayers rode 'mares. She knew that.
Gemisa gritted her teeth, eyes turning from bewildered and hurt to a fury that no one had ever seen there before. . . Not even Luci. She stood, without a word and moved to the munition cache. She took out an extra cutlass, two pistols, and a rifle. "Where?" She asked simply, another tear streaming from her eye. "Where is the bastard son of darkness?. . . WHERE LUCI!?"
"I don't know...he was close when he answered my hail...but I couldn't see him. He just said we had to find him. We'll find him. I promise...I don't know how." Luci said quietly, still clutching her locket. "Do you think he'd go back to Bel?"
"It's empty now." Gem said softly, dragging her sleeve across her eyes. "Bet he would. . . Something that powerful, that evil. . . Would prefer being alone, I'd bet." The woman sighed softly. "He killed Collin, Luc. . . He killed him. . . Let's drop the civies off at New Paris or somewhere else safe. . . And start in Belfast. . ."
